How chords are built
The short version, for reading the chords above.
-
Triads
Three notes stacked in thirds: the root, a third above it and a fifth above it. The size of the third and the fifth decides whether the triad is major, minor, diminished or augmented.
-
Seventh chords
A triad with a fourth note a seventh above the root. Major 7th, dominant 7th and minor 7th are the ones you will meet most often.
-
Suspended chords
Sus2 and sus4 swap the third for the 2nd or the 4th. Without a third they sound neither major nor minor, which is why they often lead on to another chord.
-
Inversions
The same notes with a different one at the bottom. In 1st inversion the third is lowest, in 2nd inversion the fifth is lowest, and seventh chords also have a 3rd inversion with the seventh at the bottom.
